Rego Notes

Rego to VIN — Western Australia

Enter a Western Australian registration number and get the vehicle's VIN, make, model, year and specifications.

Getting a VIN from a Western Australian plate

Western Australia calls it a vehicle licence rather than registration, and the free online check is built to answer one question: when does it expire. It is not a way to find out what a vehicle is.

For that there is Rego Notes. Select WA, enter the plate, and you get the 17-character VIN with the make, model, variant, year, body type and transmission, in a few seconds.

Get the VIN from a rego

$2.00 for one check. No account needed — results on screen and emailed to you.

Which state is it registered in?

Your card is only charged if we find the vehicle.

Checking several vehicles? Packs from 50 checks work out cheaper per check.

The plate

Reading a Western Australian number plate

Standard Western Australian plates being issued now are the number 1, three letters, then three numbers, like 1ABC 123.

Standard plates start with the number 1, not the letter I, and end in three numbers. Those two ends are where most mistyped WA plates go wrong.

Personalised, trailer and motorcycle plates follow their own patterns. Enter the plate exactly as it reads, without spaces.

The free check

What the free WA rego check gives you

Rego Notes is not a government service. Department of Transport WA runs a free check called Check your vehicle licence (rego) expiry date. You enter the plate number, for vehicles licensed in WA, and according to its own page it shows:

  • When the vehicle licence expires

What about the VIN? The details Department of Transport WA lists for its free Check your vehicle licence (rego) expiry date service do not include the VIN. A Rego Notes lookup returns the full 17 characters.

It does not show finance owing, written-off history or stolen records. Those come from a PPSR check.

Buying or selling

Selling or buying a car in Western Australia

Roadworthy
A private seller is not legally required to have a roadworthiness check done on the car they are selling. That leaves the checking to the buyer. Official source
Transferring the registration
The seller must tell the Department of Transport within 7 days of the sale, and the buyer within 14 days. Official source
Money owing on the car
No roadworthy or registration check covers this, in any state. A loan secured against a vehicle can follow it to the next owner. A finance check before you pay is the only way to see it.

These rules were checked against the official pages linked above in October 2026. They change, so confirm them before relying on them.
