Rego to VIN — Queensland
Enter a Queensland registration number and get the vehicle's VIN, make, model, year and specifications.
Getting a VIN from a Queensland plate
Queensland runs a free registration check, and it will tell you a vehicle’s make, model and body shape along with whether it is registered. What its own description of the service does not list is the VIN, and the VIN is the thing a parts catalogue, an insurer or a PPSR search asks for.
Rego Notes fills that gap. Select QLD, type the plate, and the 17-character VIN comes back in a few seconds with the make, model, variant, year, body type and transmission.
Checking several vehicles? Packs from 50 checks work out cheaper per check.
The plate
Reading a Queensland number plate
Standard Queensland plates being issued now are three numbers, two letters, then one number, like 456 BZ8. Plenty of older plates are still on the road: three numbers followed by three letters, like 123 ABC.
On the newer plates the fourth and fifth characters are letters and every other character is a number. So a round character in the fourth or fifth place is the letter O, and anywhere else it is a zero. That one swap is a common reason a Queensland lookup finds nothing.
Personalised, trailer and motorcycle plates follow their own patterns. Enter the plate exactly as it reads, without spaces.
The free check
What the free QLD rego check gives you
Rego Notes is not a government service. Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads runs a free check called Check registration status. You enter the registration number, or the VIN for a vehicle built since 1989, and according to its own page it shows:
- Registration status and expiry date
- Make, model and body shape
- Purpose of use, such as private or commercial
What about the VIN? The details Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads lists for its free Check registration status service do not include the VIN. A Rego Notes lookup returns the full 17 characters.
It does not show finance owing, written-off history or stolen records. Those come from a PPSR check.
Buying or selling
Selling or buying a car in Queensland
- Roadworthy
- The seller must give the buyer a current safety certificate when registration is transferred. It is the seller’s job to get one, not the buyer’s, and there are a few exemptions, such as transfers between spouses. Official source
- Transferring the registration
- Registration must be transferred within 14 days of the sale. Official source
- Money owing on the car
- No roadworthy or registration check covers this, in any state. A loan secured against a vehicle can follow it to the next owner. A finance check before you pay is the only way to see it.
These rules were checked against the official pages linked above in October 2026. They change, so confirm them before relying on them.
