Getting a VIN from an ACT plate
Access Canberra’s free check gives the status of a registration and, in its own words, some non-identifying information about the vehicle. By design it stops short of the details that pin a vehicle down.

The plate
Reading an ACT number plate
Standard ACT plates being issued now are the letter Y, two more letters, two numbers, then one letter, like YAB 12C.
Standard ACT plates start with the letter Y and end with a letter, with two numbers just before it. The fourth and fifth characters are the only numbers on the plate.
Personalised, trailer and motorcycle plates follow their own patterns. Enter the plate exactly as it reads, without spaces.

Rego Notes is not a government service. Access Canberra runs a free check called Check a vehicle’s registration status. You enter the plate number, and according to its own page it shows:
- The registration status
- Some non-identifying information about the vehicle
What about the VIN? The details Access Canberra lists for its free Check a vehicle’s registration status service do not include the VIN. A Rego Notes lookup returns the full 17 characters.
It does not show finance owing, written-off history or stolen records. Those come from a PPSR check.

- A roadworthy inspection is required when ACT registration is transferred for a vehicle more than six years old. Official source

- The buyer has 14 days to transfer the registration, with a late fee after that. Official source

- No roadworthy or registration check covers this, in any state. A loan secured against a vehicle can follow it to the next owner. A finance check before you pay is the only way to see it.
