Standard Northern Territory plates being issued now are two letters, two numbers, then two letters, like CA 12 BC. Plenty of older plates are still on the road: six numbers with no letters at all, like 123 456.
Older Territory plates are all numbers, which catches people out: a six-digit plate with no letters is a real plate, not a mistake.

What the free NT rego check gives you
Rego Notes is not a government service. NT Government runs a free check called Check your vehicle registration. You enter the plate number, and according to its own page it shows:
- Registration status
- Registration expiry
- Inspection date
What about the VIN? The details NT Government lists for its free Check your vehicle registration service do not include the VIN. A Rego Notes lookup returns the full 17 characters.
It does not show finance owing, written-off history or stolen records. Those come from a PPSR check.

Selling or buying a car in the Northern Territory
- Roadworthy
- From February 2026, a light vehicle seven years or older needs a roadworthy inspection when its ownership is transferred. Either the seller or the buyer can have it done. The rule changed recently, so confirm it with the Motor Vehicle Registry. Official source
- Transferring the registration
- The buyer must apply to transfer ownership within 14 days of the sale, and the seller must lodge a notice of disposal within 14 days. Official source
- Money owing on the car
- No roadworthy or registration check covers this, in any state. A loan secured against a vehicle can follow it to the next owner. A finance check before you pay is the only way to see it.
